Building Arabic Businesses

BUILDING ARABIC BUSINESSES PROJECT

Auburn City Council was invited to participate in the Building Arabic Businesses University of Western Sydney Urban Research Centre

project with the University of Western Sydney Centre for Urban Research to:

  1. Explore distinct business practices evident amongst Arabic owner-operated businesses in the Auburn-Bankstown corridor
  2. To discover to what extent and in what ways such business practices impede or enhance business growth
  3. To suggest strategies to encourage employment generation amongst Arabic owner-operated businesses in the Auburn-Bankstown corridor

Prompts to undertake this project include the:
  • 2005 Metropolitan Strategy, especially employment targets
  • High concentration of owner-managers that identify as being from NESB, particularly from Arab countries in Western Sydney.
  • Potential source of employment generation amongst the businesses, given the difficulty West Central faces in meeting its jobs targets
The location for study:

    Preliminary findings include:
    ·         The area  (West-central subregion) is an easy place to set up and do business
    ·         Lack of integration between similar organisations
Reference  was made to the regulatory barriers and hurdles that SMEs face. e.g. pay-roll tax, ever changing rules and regulations
