Saving jobs in Western Sydney

SAVING 500 JOBS IN WESTERN SYDNEYGreater Western Sydney

Like never before, job retention is critical to the economy. Now, the people of the Greater Western Sydney region and Australian Employee Buyout Centre (AEBC) have been tasked with saving 500 jobs in Western Sydney.

For Auburn City, job retention and job creation is critical as the region is one of the most disadvantaged in Sydney. Auburn City Council supports the AEBC and encourages its businesses to understand the concept of transitioning business ownership to employees.

What does saving 500 jobs mean for the local economy and that of the region?

Western Sydney covers nearly 9,000 kilometres and encompasses 14 diverse local government areas which are home to over 43% of Sydney’s population and a total of around 528,000 jobs.

With record growth over the past decade, Western Sydney stands firm on its reputation as the third largest and the fastest growing region in Australia in terms of population and economic value with the Gross Regional Product of Western Sydney just over $80 million.

The economic impacts of saving 500 jobs have been calculated using regional input output data sets for the Western Sydney region. By using the characteristics of the Western Sydney economy, impacts can be calculated as they affect each of the 17 industry sectors and the flow on effects in terms of consumption.

500 jobs, although a large  number, turns into an enormous 1038 jobs when you take  into consideration the flow on industrial and consumption effects that impact. Job losses, when turned into monetary effects means that an amount in excess of $410 million would be wrenched out of  the economy of Western Sydney if 500 jobs were not retained.
