ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

Listed below are projects that are either in progress or have been completed within the past 12 months.

Streamline: Connecting Local Business for a Sustainable Future in the Duck River Catchment

Streamline
The Streamline project aims to assist businesses in the Silverwater and Camellia areas to adopt sustainable business practices.

Streamline encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing by providing tools and opportunities for businesses to interact. These opportunities increase a business' ability to become more efficient, reduce their environmental impact and improve their bottom line.

Streamline is a partnership project between Auburn City Council and Parramatta City Council and has received funding from the NSW Environmental Trust.

Status: Year 1 and 2 have been completed and Year 3 is currently in progress.

For more information see the Streamline website.

Water Savvy Sydney Water Sustainable Business Project

Water-savvyThis project involves a dedicated Project Officer who works with small to medium local businesses to reduce water use in the workplace. This includes conducting water assessments, identifying cost effective options to reduce water use and providing subsidised water fixtures and equipment.

This a partnership project between Auburn City Council and Sydney Water, with Sydney Water providing funding and training. If you are interested in registering or would like more information please contact:

Sustainable Business Project Officer
Phone: (02) 9735 1222

Status: The Water Savvy Program has recruited 13 businesses, prepared 13 business water assessments and saved thousands of litres of water per year (saving some businesses thousands of dollars!)

Sustainable Water Management in the Duck River Catchment

This project involves a study to assess total water cycle management options for the Duck River catchment.

Led by Auburn City Council in partnership with Bankstown and Parramatta City Councils, the project has received $1.83 million funding from the NSW Environmental Trust’s Urban Sustainability Program.

Status: In progress. A feasibility study of the Duck River Catchment has been completed. The study involves catchment investigation, water quality data collation and water balance modelling to identify potential sustainable water project options.

Wyatt Park Sustainable Water Program

Results of water audits conducted for Auburn City Council's Water Savings Action Plan (WSAP) indicated significant water leaks at Wyatt Park, largely from the Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre (Aquatic Centre) and the Athletics Field.

This project involved the identification and repair of major leaks at the Aquatic Centre and Athletics Field, and the installation of rainwater tanks (55,000L capacity) to provide a sustainable water resource for use at the Aquatic Centre. Sub-meters were also installed at the Aquatic Centre to monitor water consumption at different locations in the site.

Status: The project was successfully completed in April 2010.

Wyatt Park Stormwater Harvesting Project

This project, part of the 'Sustaining the Parramatta River Catchment' project involved implementing stormwater harvesting at Wyatt Park in order to reduce the reliance on potable water supplies.

The stormwater harvesting system constructed helps to extract stormwater from an existing Sydney Water Corporation gross pollutant trap (GPT). The system then treats and stores the water for irrigation of Lidcombe Oval and the Athletics Field. Gravity-fed through a series of hydro-filters, the water then receives UV treatment for disinfection and is pumped into storage tanks. The treated overflow is discharged into Haslam's Creek.

Status: Completed in 2010. The benefits of this project have already commenced and the project is expected to have potable water savings of at least 16 million litres per year. That’s over 16 mega litres!

Auburn Bowling Club Redevelopment Project

Auburn Community CentreOver the past two years Auburn City Council has committed capital works funding of $900,000 towards the conversion of the former Auburn Bowling Club into the establishment of a multi-purpose community facility. Over $1.8 million in Federal Government funding was also secured.

Located on the corner of Hutchinson Street and Macquarie Road in Auburn, the Centre has been retrofitted to create a highly efficient multi-purpose community facility that minimises the demand for energy and water. Sustainability features of the building include:
  • a 6 kilowatt photovoltaic (solar powered) system on the roof
  • highly efficient lighting and movement sensors
  • a large area of skylighting, high water efficiency fixtures
  • the maintaining of the buildings external shell (to reduce waste and maintain embodied energy)
  • a solar hot water system
  • a 90,000L rainwater tank system to supply toilets
  • urinals and drip irrigation, and
  • intelligent building design to maximise natural ventilation.
Status: Complete

Water in the Landscape Project

The Water in the Landscape project, led by the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils, includes funding for community cultural development initiatives to engage the general population in addressing regional water issues.

Auburn City Council is currently developing a specific water-related community project that responds to landscape cultural values within a context of decreasing water availability.

Status: Auburn City Council is currently developing a community project in close consultation with relevant community groups.
