ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainable Development
One of the key challenges of the 21st Century is the global transition to sustainability, to meet the needs of Australians today, while conserving our ecosystems for the benefit of future generations of all species.
Over the last twenty years, the world has begun to recognise that our environmental problems and their solutions are closely linked with the state of the economy and the health of our communities.
Sustainability may be described as meeting the challenge of striving simultaneously towards:
Social responsibility
- making decisions that lead to greater physical, cultural and financial access and equity in service delivery and activities.
Environmental responsibility
– using resources only as required to deliver activities and services.
Economic responsibility
– promoting and maintaining a city’s economic development and growth in a sustainable manner.
Good Governance
– accountability and transparency in decision-making; effective financial and asset management; reviewing activities and making necessary changes; and involving citizens in and updating them on, councils planning and management actions.
Thinking globally, acting locally
Our focus is to think globally and act locally.
To meet this challenge, Auburn City Council has developed a sustainability strategy called
Our Auburn - Vibrant Thriving Sustainable
. The aim of the strategy is to reflect Council's vision for a sustainable Auburn, both as an organisation and a community.
The strategy will shape Council's path to becoming more sustainable at a local level within the global context.
Auburn City Council Sustainability Strategy
Our Auburn
details Council's long term goals for sustainable development in all aspects of the organisation.
Cities for Climate Protection
In 2006, Auburn City Council joined the Cities for Climate Protection program, a local greenhouse action initiative administered in Australia by
Local Governments for Sustainability
.
As a result of participation in the program, Council developed the Local Greenhouse Action Plan, which aims to reduce corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions in the Auburn area.
Environmentally Friendly Living
We live in a world where our actions now will greatly affect future generations of people more than they ever have before.
We can all help protect and enhance our environment by living a sustainable lifestyle at home, and at work.
Sustainable Businesses
Businesses are often high energy and/or water users. This means expensive utility bills, waste removal bills and trade-waste costs.
There are numerous actions businesses can take to turn this around and many programs that can assist. Find out how to reduce your ecological footprint at work.
