Illegal dumping
Each week tonnes of illegally dumped waste is collected in the Auburn Local Government Area and costs Council ratepayers money to remove.
Illegal rubbish dumping is a serious problem which negatively affects our community and pollutes our environment. Dumped rubbish harms the environment, is unsightly and unhealthy, attracts vermin, and can be a physical and fire hazard.
Illegal dumpers are often residents or business's who choose to dump waste for convenience rather than take the time to dispose of correctly or to avoid paying disposal fees. Dumpers are often from outside the LGA.
Help our Rangers keep our streets clean by reporting illegal dumpers.
Dumping is a serious criminal offence which carries a fine of up to $750 for individuals and $1,500 for businesses.

Illegal dumping spoils the neighbourhood

Dob in a Dumper campaign. What to do if you discover dumped waste?

If you see someone dumping or discover dumped waste, please follow these simple guidelines:

  • Take note of the day, date and time you saw the dumping.
  • If a vehicle is used, take note of the make, colour and registration.
  • Do not touch the waste. Dumped waste can be dangerous and may contain syringes, broken glass, asbestos, toxic chemicals or other hazardous substances.
  • Visually inspect the waste. Try to determine what the waste consists of and how much there is. Take note of its exact location.
  • Do not disturb the site. There may be evidence that could help identify the culprits and lead to their prosecution.
  • Report the dumped waste to Council, either by calling Customer Service on (02) 9735 1222 or lodge a report online.

Rewards are available upon successful prosecutions.

Fines, ranging from up to $1,500 for individuals and $5,000 for corporations, can be issued for illegal dumping of rubbish and can include:
  • Transport waste to place that is not a lawful facility for that waste.
  • Unlawfully transport asbestos/hazardous waste.
  • Deposit litter including cigarettes.
  • Deposit litter from vehicle.
  • Deposit advertising material in place or on a vehicle
