Ink cartridge recycling

Ink cartridge recyclingINK CARTRIDGE RECYCLING

Australians use millions of printer cartridges each year!

Cartridges are made up of a complex mix of plastics, metal, inks and toners.   When they are disposed of into landfill these resources are lost.

Cartridges for Planet Ark (Business)

Auburn City Council is supporting Planet Ark in preventing ink cartridges from going to landfill.

We are urging businesses in the local area to join Auburn City Council in participating in the recycling program.

Visit the Planet Ark website to see if your business qualifies for a free Cartridges 4 Planet Ark collection box.

Collection Points (Community)

Collection points have been established at Libraries throughout the Local Government Area, as well as at Council’s Customer Service Centre at the Town Hall.

All residents need to do is take their used ink cartridges and place them in the special Cartridges 4 Planet Art boxes.

Recycling bins have been set up at leading retailers including Australia Post, Officeworks, Harvey Norman, Tandy, Dick Smith Electronics and Powerhouse outlets.

To find your nearest participating store visit www.RecyclingNearYou.com.au.

Toner and ink are potentially serious contaminants if dumped in landfill and the plastics and metals that are used to make the cartridge casings are a valuable resource. Planet Ark have partnered with  Close the Loop to recycle these cartridges. These materials are then made into new products:
  • Aluminium – smeltered into new aluminium products
  • Steel – used to make new steel based products
  • Toner – pigment for colouring plastic
  • Plastics – promotional products, park benches , 'plastic lumber' timber replacement products (e.g. park benches and fence posts)
  • Ink – low grade industrial and commercial printing (e.g. barcodes on boxes)
