Auburn City Council recognises the importance of pets for residents in our local area, but owning a pet involves a great deal of responsibility.
Not only are you, as a pet owner, responsible for the welfare of your animal, but you also need to ensure that your pet doesn't become a nuisance to the community. If you're a responsible and caring pet owner, then you will have a happy and well cared for animal.
Auburn City Council implements a number of policies about animal control, including:
Council Rangers will pick up roaming dogs and cats in the Auburn area and take them to the Blacktown City Council Pound at 415 Flushcombe Road, Blacktown.
The pound is open to the public between 7 am and 3.30 pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday between 9 and 11 am. They can be contacted on (02) 9839 6160.
What happens if my pet is impounded?
Dogs and cats that are impounded must be microchipped and registered for life before being released from the Blacktown City Council pound.
Release fees and sustenance expenses will be charged in addition to microchipping and registration fees.
Infringement notices will be issued through the post for any offence under the companion Animals Act following the collection of the animal from the pound.
If an impounded dog or cat is registered, the animal will be held in the pound for 14 days. If the dog is unregistered it will be housed for 7 days. After this period the animal will be either sold or destroyed. Identification or a Letter of Authority from the owner is required before a dog is released.
What if I find a dog?
A person who seizes or captures a dog must contact Auburn City Council on (02) 9735 1222 and a Council Ranger will come and collect the dog. Any person who seizes a dog and fails to notify Council will be subject to a fine.
If you are looking for a missing animal please contact Auburn City Council.
