40KM/H SPEED LIMIT MAKES AUBURN THE CENTRE OF SAFETY
In a sign of Auburn’s City Council’s commitment to road safety, a 40 km/h speed limit will be in place throughout the town centre from Tuesday, 28 February 2012.
In a joint venture with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS – formerly Roads and Traffic Authority), Auburn is now in line with a growing number of city and town centres with 40km/h speed limits.
Auburn Mayor Ronney Oueik reminded the community that the limit will be enforced by police and advised motorists to take extra care to drive within the speed limit at all times.
“I am proud to introduce this safety measure because one injury or death is too many. Auburn is a growing community with a lot of pedestrians including many children and the elderly, so it’s vital we send the right message about safety,” he said.
“Safety is always Council’s number one priority on our roads and I thank the RMS for their partnership and support in making this possible.”
The speed limit will be signposted on roads with high pedestrian activity and significant traffic volumes, including; South Parade, Auburn Road, Harrow Road, Mary Street, Queen Street, Kerr Parade, Vales Lane, Civic Road/Station Road and Town Hall Lane.
