Auburn Sportfields gear up for Summer season

Auburn City’s parks maintenance team has been hard at work preparing Council’s sport grounds for the summer season. Cricket wickets have been uncovered, grounds have been levelled and the winter season goal posts removed.

Parks Manager David Sheils said: “it is great to see that the local demand for our cricket facilities has increased. To make sure our players have the best playing conditions, we will be replacing the existing synthetic wicket surfaces in October in time for the start of the season.”

“We are also finalising the ground allocations for summer sports such as cricket, cycling and athletics.”

Mayor Hicham Zraika is really pleased with the increased popularity of sport in the Auburn area: “During winter season, we have had a record number of Auburn based players (football, AFL, rugby league) scoring tries and kicking goals on local grounds. It has been great season for our local clubs who have excelled in their competition with quite a few teams playing in the finals.” We congratulate the players, parents, coaches and club committees for their effort and time they have taken to help grow their respective sports and foster the benefits of community sport.

“The Auburn LGA has a high proportion of children and young people compared to the Sydney average and many of them are active members of the local sporting clubs.  Sports grounds do not only provide a place for sport but are also places where people from all backgrounds and cultures have the opportunity to meet and gain a better understanding of other people in the area.”

“Auburn City Council promotes physical fitness and healthy lifestyles through providing quality sporting facilities and through encouraging membership of local sports clubs.”

Council spends approximately $1 million on sports ground maintenance this includes watering and drainage, resurfacing, landscaping, fencing and lighting.
