Free Football Fun at Auburn Park

Following an outstanding response to the first two coaching and soccer game sessions at Auburn Park, organisers are looking for even more local youngsters to put on their boots and get involved in the beautiful game.

Approximately 85 children aged between 5 and 14 attended from Auburn North Public School, St John’s Primary and Auburn Girls High School.

Auburn City Council and Football United are calling for as many young people between the ages of 6 and 16, living in the Auburn Local Government Area to come along and have a go.

The sessions are held every Thursday from 4.00pm to 5.30pm at Auburn Park, corner of Hutchinson Street and Macquarie Road, Auburn.

“Football United is an organisation who wants to engage new migrants and refugees through football to help them integrate into the community. It’s not just about giving children and young people the opportunity to play informal games. It’s also about leadership, developing organizational skills, coaching and coach education and learning to referee,” said Linda Boustani, Community Development Officer for Youth at Auburn City Council.

“There are similar programs in different countries around the world. In fact, young people from the Football United program represented Australia in a tournament run alongside the World Cup in South Africa last year.”

Mayor Ronney Oueik said of the project: “This project is a great opportunity for local young people to get involved in sport, to make new friends and to learn new skills. I believe a healthy body creates a healthy mind so this project is especially valuable to people living in units with no direct access to outdoor space. I really hope that lots of children will participate in this unique program.”
