New building spells progress for Auburn South

Residents of Auburn South will benefit from a new multipurpose community space at Progress Park on Wellington Road. Once the new building is completed it will provide Auburn with its first ever playgroup space.
Auburn Council’s successful grant application has secured the additional cash injection of $210,000 from State Government under their community partnership building program. The remaining costs of approximately $790,000 will be funded by Auburn Council.
Following talks with user groups, the new space - which will be located closer to the Auburn Community Picnic Ground - will include:
·         A large 100m2 multi functional space for playgroups, sport and youth activities
·         Fenced playarea which connects with the multi-functional space
·         Secured storage space for different users
·         A large kiosk and canteen area
·         New change room facilities with showers
·         New toilets, using collected roof water for flushing
·         A community meeting room
·         A large undercover awning

Mayor Hicham Zraika who advocates for improved facilities and programs for Auburn’s youth said: “Progress Park is located in an area with lots of young people, but the area has a severe shortage of youth specific facilities and lacks child friendly spaces. This new space will go a long way towards filling that gap. Clubs and local groups will be able to carry out programs that improve the health and wellbeing of young people in the area while also engaging them in meaningful activities.”

“The building will give playgroups a secure and safe facility to enable them to carry out their work of providing networking opportunities for parents and connecting families.”

“New facilities at Progress Park are long overdue. The existing building is old and doesn’t meet the basic needs of existing sports grounds users. It does not have any disabled access, lacks functional, modern and accessible toilet facilities and has no flexible space to cater for a range of community activities. ”

“We are looking forward to giving the community a space to hold essential community activities such as playgroups, sport, recreation activities and meetings.”

The existing building will be converted into a storage space for sporting and community group using Progress Park.
Work on the new building will be completed by December 2010.
