REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
In NSW over 90% of electricity comes from coal-fired power stations. The more electricity we use the more coal is burnt and more greenhouse gasses are emitted, contributing to global warming. Households are responsible for a third of all NSW’s energy use. Everyday activities such as water heating, room heating and cooling, cooking, lighting and use of various electrical appliances consume a lot of energy. Here are some simple things you can do to reduce your energy consumption, save money on bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions:
■ Install energy efficient light globes and remember to switch off the lights when you leave a room.
■ Good insulation can save between 20-40% on heating and cooling costs.
■ Install a solar or heat pump hot water system – Solar hot water systems can reduce your household water bills by around 65% each year, compared to standard electrical systems.
■ Buy energy efficient appliances – Energy rating labels indicate efficiency - the more stars, the better.
■ For cooling, use a ceiling fan rather than an air conditioner.
■ For heating, natural gas heaters with 4-6 star rating are best. However try rugging up with a jumper instead of switching on the heater!
■ Use the cold water setting on your washing machine to save hot water.
■ Wait until you have a full load before using dishwasher or washing machine
■ Turn off your TV off at the wall and turn the power off on your VCR, DVD and CD player at night.
