How we get rid of your rubbish
Auburn City Council offers a wide range of waste services including recycling and refuse collections, garden waste collections, special excess household waste collections, collection of white electrical goods and street cleaning services.
Garbage Collection
Council offers a WEEKLY garbage collection for all properties. Residents can choose from the following options:
- 120L garbage bin OR 240L garbage bin (selected rate options)
- 240L garbage bin (2 residential units per bin)
- or a 660L garbage bin (5 residential units per bin)
*Please note some properties currently have black bins with black lids, however, these black lids will be replaced with new red lids in due course.
YES – foam products, food waste, nappy, plastic bag, broken glass.
NO – building waste, medical waste, garden vegetation, hazardous materials
Recycling Collection
Council provides a 240L recycling bin, which is the bin with the yellow lid, for all residential properties. These bins are collected every fortnight on the opposite week of the garden waste collection. Click on the link below the see the collection days for your street.
If your unit block requires additional recycling bins, please contact your Strata Manager or Body Corporate.
Tips:
- Make room in your kitchen for a recycling box
- Glass, tin/steel cans, paper, cardboard and plastic are all recyclable materials
- Recycling leaves more space for normal waste in your waste bin
- Recycling significantly reduces waste going into landfill
- Clean and flatten boxes and cartons
- Empty food and liquids from bottles, jars and containers and wash out any remaining contents
- Remove lids from plastic bottles and containers
- Plastic bags are NOT part of Council's recycling service and should not be placed in recycling bins
Please remember not to place your recycling in plastic bags!

NO – food waste, hazardous material, broken crockery, foam, plastic bags, garden vegetation.
Garden Waste Collection
Council provides a 240L garden waste bin only available to single dwelling houses, town houses and villas. These bins are collected every fortnight on the opposite week of the recycling collection.
*Please note some properties currently have dark green bins with dark green lids, however, these dark green lids will be replaced with new bright green lids in due course.
Tips
It is best to place prunings, dry leaves or twigs at the bottom of your garden waste bin and grass clippings on top. This will prevent the grass clippings from sticking in the bottom of your bin.
If you have more garden waste than can fit in your bin, make sure bundle it properly so it can be easily carried by one person and place it next to the bin.
Noxious weeds such as astma weed, green cestrum, campher laureland privet should not be placed in your garden waste bin.
You can reduce your garden waste by composting or wormfarming, which turns your garden waste into free fertiliser.
No plastic bags are building waste are to be placed into your garden waste bin.
YES – grass, leaves, prunings, flowers, sticks and twigs
NO – food waste, hazardous material, plastic bags, pots and tubes, rocks.
Non-collectable materials include:
- Oil and paints
- Concrete and masonry
- Non-recyclable glass such as mirrors and windows
- Industrial metals such as steel, tin and aluminium
- Cars, car batteries and car-parts
- Gas bottles
Items not collected by Council, can be disposed of at the Waste Management Centre at Hill Road, Lidcombe or to Chullora Recycling Park, located at: Muir Road, Chullora, next to the RSPCA. Phone Number: 1300-651-116.
For the disposal of asbestos cement sheeting, liquid waste, chemicals and hazardous substances – contact the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change’s environmental hotline for instructions on 131 555.
On average Council collects:
- 18,429 weekly waste collections of 17,329.25 tonnes using 240 litre bins and 660 litre bins for multi-unit dwellings.
- 12,192 garden waste collections every fortnight collecting 2893.87 tonnes.
- 36,858 collections of larger household with a total tonnage of 1735.96.
- 18,429 recycling collections every two weeks with a total tonnage of 2512.89.

To encourage residents to reduce waste, council offers the opportunity to reduce your waste service charge. Each dwelling can choose one the following options:
- Option one: 120 litre garbage bin and 240 litre recycling bin for a $257.20 service.
- Option two: 120 litre garbage bin, 240 litre recycling bin and a 240 litre garden waste bin for a $282.20 service.
- Option three: 240 litre garbage bin, 240 litre recycling and a 240 litre garden waste bin for a $405.60 service.
