Auburn Council’s Strategic Plan: Auburn 2030 specifically outlines “An innovative and economically thriving Auburn” as one of Council’s key directions. Within this key direction, it is Auburn’s goal to promote local job growth and support entrepreneurship as well as sustainable and socially responsible economic growth. The AuburnEconomic Development Statement 2006 further outlines Auburn Council’s economic vision for the area over the next 5 years, which is “to improve the local job market and to support local business initiatives and learning opportunities.”
Employment and learning opportunities are recognised by Council’s Community Development Unit as significant areas in need of local program development. A central aim of the AuburnStrategic Social Plan 2005 - 2010, is “significant improvement in Auburn’s profile of relative disadvantage”. Auburn ranks poorly on the ABS indices of relative disadvantage and research shows that Auburn residents experience multiple disadvantage. Concentrations of particular disadvantage, such as recency of arrival, arrival as a refugee, poor or no English language skills, little or no familiarity with ‘western’ civic, political or social systems add considerable weight to the burdens of poverty, unemployment and housing stress.
