Water conservation
Water is an important resource which is why we need to limit our water use and waste as little as possible. Australia is the driest continent in the world and continuing drought is making water conservation and recycling a priority. Australia wastes up to 92% of its city runoff and Sydneysiders alone use an average of 412 litres of water a day which is 20 times more water per day per person than what the World Health Organisation defines as a bare minimum.
Annually, Sydney exceeds by at least 30 giga litres the sustainable flow from its catchment dams and this is growing as the population increases. It is everybody’s responsibility to substantially limit their water usage.
The benefits of water conservation are:
- Reduces the demand on our water supply
- Saves us money on our water bills
- Reduces the need for new dams
- Increases water supply
- Provides alternate supply in case of tainted mains supply
- Reduces stormwater runoff from properties that can cause local flooding problems
